Habagat & Super El Niño Combination Could Bring Powerful Typhoons
SUPER EL NIÑO – The Philippines could face challenging weather conditions from June to August as PAGASA monitors the possible effects of Habagat and Super El Niño.
From June to August, the Philippines may experience strong typhoons brought about by the southwest monsoon or “Habagat” combined with the possible effects of a Super El Niño phenomenon, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Because of this, authorities are already urging the public to prepare for possible weather disturbances that could affect different parts of the country.
Based on PAGASA’s findings, as reported by GMA Network’s “24 Oras,” these potentially powerful storms may develop through the combined impact of Habagat and Super El Niño conditions. Weather experts are closely monitoring these developments, especially as the rainy season begins to intensify in the coming months.
Over the past several weeks, some areas in the country have already experienced flooding despite the absence of tropical cyclones. Even ordinary thunderstorms were enough to trigger floods in certain locations, raising concerns about how stronger weather systems could further affect communities.
According to PAGASA officials, there is currently a reported 92% probability involving the combined effects of Habagat and Super El Niño, which could result in heavy rainfall events in the country. Ana Solmoro-Solis, chief of CLIMPS PAGASA, discussed the possible weather scenario and its potential impact during an interview.
Meanwhile, PAGASA weather specialist Charmagne Varilla explained, “Ang hindi naman po maganda na maging impact dito sa western section ng bansa po natin, dahil ‘pag nasabay po ‘yan sa Habagat season, which is between June or start ng tag-ulan, ay mas ina-exacerbate or mas pinakalakas po niya ‘yong Habagat,” she said.
Experts also clarified that even if fewer typhoons enter the country during the mentioned period, the storms that do develop could become stronger and more dangerous. Some may bring intense winds and heavy rainfall, while others could produce powerful winds despite having little or no rain.
Because of these possibilities, residents living in flood-prone communities are advised to begin preparing early. Concerns remain over flood control measures that have yet to fully address recurring flooding issues in vulnerable areas.
Authorities continue to remind the public to stay updated on official weather bulletins and take necessary precautions as the country enters months that may bring challenging weather conditions.
