Welder Struggling w/ Emotional PrOblems Rescued After Jumping Into Iloilo River

A 25-year-old welder was rescued after jumping into the Iloilo River from Quirino Bridge in Barangay Rizal Lapuz Sur, Lapuz, Iloilo City. 

On Tuesday morning (August 25, 2026), a man, identified only as alias Toto was reportedly with his older brother, alias Jan, when the incident happened shortly after 11 a.m. The latter is a welder and a resident of Barangay Boulevard in Molo. 

According to Jan, the two had gone to La Paz because Toto needed to have his clothes repaired. They were already on their way home when they stopped at the traffic light near Quirino Bridge.

While they were waiting, Toto suddenly got off the motorcycle and ran toward the bridge before jumping into the river. 

Jan said the incident happened so quickly that he was unable to stop his younger brother. He immediately sought help, prompting responders to rush to the area. 

The City Disaster Response Team later rescued Toto from the river. Authorities and responders worked together to bring him to safety following the incident.

Jan also shared that his younger brother had been struggling with emotional problems for several years. He reportedly experienced a serious emotional breakdown after his wife died from a brain tumor in 2019. 

Toto is also a father to a six-year-old boy. His family is now dealing with the incident while making sure he receives the support and care he needs.  

Authorities and local responders have not released further details about Toto’s condition following the rescue. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review as his family continues to support him.
