Zamboanga Shooting Incident – The Department of Education (DepEd) immediately issued a statement regarding the shooting incident that occurred inside the Ateneo de Zamboanga Junior High School campus in Zamboanga City on the morning of Tuesday, August 18.
The incident involved the alleged discharge of a firearm by a Grade 7 student inside a classroom at the Ateneo de Zamboanga Junior High School campus, resulting in the deaths of a student and the suspect himself.
In a statement released on Tuesday, DepEd expressed deep concern regarding the reported shooting incident at the aforementioned school.
The agency extended its sympathies to the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this time and stated its readiness to provide support to students, families, school staff, and other authorities.
“DepEd stands with the Ateneo de Zamboanga community during this difficult time and is ready to extend whatever support and assistance we can to the affected learners, families, school personnel, and concerned authorities,” the agency stated.
The agency emphasized that it is already coordinating with its mental health partners to provide Psychological First Aid and psychosocial support to those affected by the shooting incident. It also encouraged the public not to circulate unconfirmed information.
“We urge the public to refrain from spreading unverified information and sharing sensitive photos, videos, or details about the incident, especially since minors are involved,” the agency stressed.
The administration of the Ateneo de Zamboanga also issued a statement regarding the horrific incident, expressing their grief over what happened. AdZU assured that the welfare and safety of their students remain their top priority, and asked the public to respect the privacy of the affected individuals.
The educational institution is also hoping for a quick resolution of this matter. “Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” it added.
