9-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Hit by Jeepney in Cagayan de Oro City
A 9-year-old girl has lost her life after she was hit and run over by a passenger jeepney in Cagayan de Oro City.
The incident happened near the busy Cogon Public Market, where many people were present at the time.
According to the police investigation, the jeepney reportedly lost its brakes while on the road. As a result, it struck the young girl who was crossing the street. The situation quickly turned chaotic and emotional, as bystanders witnessed the child trapped under the vehicle.

A video of the incident showed a group of angry individuals attacking the 47-year-old driver. The crowd’s anger grew as they saw the child still underneath the jeepney. The driver suffered injuries from the beating and was only saved when police officers arrived at the scene and stopped the mob.
After authorities took the driver to the police station, the crowd’s anger did not fade. Instead, they turned their attention to the jeepney itself, eventually pushing and overturning it.
Patrolman Christian Villalobos shared that the driver admitted he had already noticed a problem with the vehicle’s brakes before the accident. He had tried to fix it, but the issue remained unresolved.

The driver has not released any public statement and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family brought her remains back to Lanao del Sur for burial. Her father is expected to return to the city to pursue legal action against the driver.
The incident also raises concerns about road safety and proper vehicle maintenance.
