Elderly PWD Allegedly Robbed of Nearly ₱600,000 by Caregiver
A caregiver was arrested in Makati City after allegedly stealing nearly ₱600,000 in cash and jewelry from her 77-year-old employer, a person with disability (PWD).
The incident was discovered by the victim’s family at around 7:00 a.m. on August 12 in Barangay San Antonio. The family reportedly noticed that an envelope inside the victim’s bag had been tampered with. When they checked it, they found pieces of white paper cut and arranged to look like real money instead of the cash that was supposed to be inside.
Police said the missing valuables were worth an estimated ₱594,787. These reportedly included ₱294,787 in cash, a gold bracelet, and a gold ring valued at around ₱300,000.
The family confronted the caregiver after discovering the missing items. According to police, she allegedly admitted taking the money and jewelry.
The caregiver reportedly tried to return part of what she had taken. She sent ₱15,000 to the complainant through GCash and surrendered her iPhone. However, authorities later arrested her at around 8:40 p.m. on the same day.
The suspect is facing a qualified theft complaint and has undergone inquest proceedings at the Makati City Police Station. Authorities are preparing the documents needed to formally file the case in court.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full details of the incident and whether other valuables may have been taken.
The case has drawn attention because the alleged victim was an elderly PWD who depended on the caregiver for assistance. The incident also highlights the importance of closely monitoring the finances and belongings of elderly and vulnerable individuals, especially when they rely on others for their daily needs.
The caregiver remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Authorities will continue gathering evidence as the legal process moves forward.
