Fishermen Found Dead Whale Shark Along Bacolod City Coastline

A dead whale shark, locally known as butanding, was found along the coastline of Bacolod City, is it a sign of an upcoming calamity?

On early Friday morning, October 30, 2026, fishermen found the whale shark near Prk. 6, Sitio Magsungay, Barangay Singcang. Another report also confirmed the discovery of a dead whale shark along the coast of Barangay 35.

According to initial estimates from the City Agriculture Office, the whale shark measured around seven meters long and weighed approximately three to four tons. Residents also reported that whale sharks were often seen swimming near the coast of Barangay Magsungay before the animal was found dead.

The City Agriculture Office and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) immediately responded to the incident to assess the situation and determine the necessary steps.

Based on the initial findings, authorities believe the whale shark may have been stranded during low tide and was unable to return to deeper waters. However, the exact cause of its death has not yet been confirmed.

While the City Agriculture Office reported that no visible injuries were found on the animal, a local account mentioned that blood was seen on its body. This raised concerns that it may have been hit by a ship’s propeller, although this possibility has yet to be verified.
