Diocese of Kalookan Issues Apology Over Bird Incident During Easter Sunday

The Diocese of Kalookan has issued an apology for tying a bird to balloons during the Easter Sunday Salubong in Malabon.

The ritual was a part of the celebration at the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of the Immaculate Conception in Malabon. However, the pigeon was tied to balloons and released into the air with its wings restrained.

Church officials explained that the use of a live pigeon has long been a tradition in the parish. It was originally introduced as a safer option instead of using a child dressed as an angel, a practice that dates back many years.

Normally, the bird is gently released right after the unveiling, symbolizing peace and the meeting of Jesus and His mother.

However, this year’s setup was different. It was later found that the pigeon had been tied to a cluster of balloons, which caused distress not only among church leaders but also among those who saw the act.

The diocese expressed regret over the incident and acknowledged that it should not have taken place.

Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David was present during the celebration, but reports said he only witnessed the unveiling from a lower part of the structure and was not aware of what happened afterward.

Church leaders clarified that the action was not approved and does not reflect the values they promote.

Aside from concerns for the bird’s safety, the diocese also pointed out the possible harm to the environment. Balloons released into the air may end up in bodies of water, where marine animals could mistake them for food.

The parish has promised to stop using balloons in future celebrations. They also committed to ensuring that any bird used will be released properly and safely.
