Castro and fellow nurse Jeffrey Cañete had just finished conducting a Measles-Rubella Supplemental Immunization Activity in the barangay. After completing their duties, the two went to a motorboat docking area where they planned to wait for transportation back to Catbalogan City.

While waiting, Castro sat under a waiting shed near the docking area. Moments later, a concrete slab from the structure suddenly gave way and fell on him. The heavy debris struck him in the head and caused severe injuries.

Cañete, along with nearby residents and daycare teachers from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, immediately rushed to help. They worked together to remove Castro from the collapsed structure and quickly brought him to Samar Provincial Hospital for emergency treatment.
