Klea Pineda Speaks Out Against Bullying of Her PWD Father
KLEA PINEDA – The Kapuso actress called out a social media user who made an insensitive joke about her father, who is a person with disability (PWD).
Klea reposted an Instagram story from her sister, Kaye Pineda, showing a conversation with a netizen who asked why their father was missing one ear. Kaye explained that their father was born with microtia, a condition in which the outer ear is underdeveloped or missing. She also encouraged the netizen to learn more about the condition.
Instead of responding respectfully, the social media user made a joke comparing their father’s missing ear to pork sisig, a popular Filipino dish that commonly includes pig’s ears.
The comment prompted Klea to speak out. She explained that microtia is a condition present from birth and is not something a person should be ashamed of. She also criticized the decision to use someone’s disability as a joke or as a way to attack another person.
Klea stressed that people do not have to like each other or each other’s families, but mocking a person’s disability is unacceptable. She added that making fun of someone’s condition does not make a person funny or impressive and instead reflects on the person making the joke.
The actress also made it clear that she would stand up for and protect her family. In another Instagram story, she expressed her determination to protect her loved ones at all costs. Klea did not mention whether she plans to file a complaint or take legal action against the netizen.
Microtia is a congenital condition that affects the development of the outer ear. Its severity can vary from a smaller-than-usual ear to the complete absence of the outer ear.
Under the amended Republic Act No. 7277, or the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons, discrimination and acts that insult, humiliate, or degrade persons with disabilities are prohibited.
