Off-Duty Police Officer Shows Courage and Helped to Put Out Car Fire at Gas Station
An off-duty police officer showed courage after helping stop a car fire at a gas station, preventing a more serious incident.
The officer, identified as Police Master Sergeant Kennedy Tungpalan from the Angadanan Police Station, was on his way home with his wife at around 7:30 in the morning on April 20, 2026. While passing through Barangay Alibagu in Ilagan City, he noticed smoke and unusual activity at a nearby gas station.
The cop immediately stepped out of the vehicle to check the situation. He then saw a car already on fire while parked inside the gas station. Even though he was off duty at the time, he did not hesitate to take action.

He quickly grabbed a fire extinguisher from the establishment and used it to control the flames. His fast response helped stop the fire from spreading, especially in a place where flammable materials are present. A bigger disaster was avoided because of his actions.
The driver of the car later shared that he was not aware that the vehicle had already started to catch fire as he entered the gas station. The management of the establishment expressed their gratitude, as the officer’s immediate response helped prevent possible damage to nearby structures and ensured the safety of people in the area.
Philippine National Police Chief Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. highlighted that this kind of action reflects the true spirit of public service. He emphasized that police officers are expected to remain ready to help at any time, even when they are not on duty.
