Risa Hontiveros Demands Action Over Shortage of Critical HIV Medicines
RISA HONTIVEROS – A reported shortage of essential HIV medicines has caught the attention of Senator Risa Hontiveros, who is urging the government to act before patients are forced to face disruptions in their treatment.
Senator Risa Hontiveros has expressed concern over reports of dwindling supplies of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs used by patients living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the Philippines.
Hontiveros warned that the shortage could affect patients who rely on ARV medicines as part of their HIV treatment. According to the senator, HIV treatment hubs across the country are now being forced to stretch their remaining supplies because of limited stocks.
The senator urged the government to take immediate action, stressing that the issue involves the lives and health of people living with HIV. She emphasized that patients should not be placed in a situation where they are unable to consistently take the medicines they need.
She added that the supplier must guarantee a sufficient supply of antiretroviral (ARV) drugs and ensure their immediate delivery to hospitals, in accordance with the Philippine HIV and AIDS Policy Act (Republic Act 11166).
The senator pointed out that suppliers must fulfill their commitment to provide sufficient quantities of ARV drugs and ensure their prompt delivery to healthcare facilities. She cited the AIDS and HIV Act, or Republic Act 11166, as the legal framework requiring proper support for HIV prevention, treatment, care, and services.
Hontiveros also stressed the importance of uninterrupted access to HIV medication. ARV drugs play a crucial role in managing HIV by helping suppress the virus and supporting the health of people living with the condition. Any disruption in treatment can become a serious concern for patients and healthcare providers.
The senator further called for accountability regarding the reported shortage, stating that the situation is deeply alarming and should not be ignored.
She insists that someone must be held accountable for the issue, reasoning that it is deeply alarming.
For Hontiveros, the reported shortage should prompt government agencies and suppliers to immediately address gaps in the distribution and availability of ARV medicines.
The senator’s warning underscores the importance of a reliable supply chain for essential HIV medications. Ensuring that treatment hubs have adequate stocks is vital so patients can continue their prescribed treatment without unnecessary interruptions.
