SOUTH COTABATO SCHOOL SHOOTING – DepEd is investigating another violent incident that happened at Banga National High School.
There have been several major cases of school shootings reported so far in the Philippines. These include cases in Tacloban City and Zamboanga City. The incidents involved students among the victims and suspects, prompting authorities to review school safety measures and provide support to those affected.
The most recent one reported is the incident that happened in Banga, South Cotabato. The latest shooting occurred at Banga National High School. Initial reports varied as authorities continued verifying the casualty figures.
It was initially reported that four students were wounded and the suspected Grade 9 shooter died by taking his own life. Later reports put the number of fatalities and injured higher as authorities continued their assessment.
According to reports, the Banga shooting left three people dead and six others injured. The Department of Education (DepEd) said it is coordinating with authorities as the circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
South Cotabato Governor Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. said police were still investigating the incident. Four students were initially taken to different hospitals for treatment, and their conditions are being monitored.
Schools Division Superintendent Leonardo Balala said the shooting happened during the students’ noon break, as per an interview with Radio Mindanao Network’s DXDC. The fatalities reportedly included the suspected shooter.
The shooting incident prompted municipal officials to suspend classes at all levels, both in public and private schools.
Meanwhile, DepEd expressed concern over the shooting and said the safety of students, teachers, and school staff remains its top priority. The agency is working with local officials and authorities to investigate the incident and help those affected. It also plans to provide psychological and emotional support to the students and others involved.
