Woman Arrested in Iloilo City for Alleged Illegal DIY Braces Service Learned Online
A 22-year-old woman was arrested in Iloilo City for allegedly offering illegal DIY braces services she learned through online videos.
The woman reportedly learned through online videos and reading materials on the internet. Authorities said the suspect charged only P3,000 for braces installation and P1,500 for braces removal. She also allegedly offered other dental-related services such as tooth whitening and dentures.
The arrest was carried out through an entrapment operation conducted by the Iloilo City Cyber Response Team of the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) in coordination with the Philippine Dental Association.
The operation took place in Jaro, Iloilo City after authorities monitored her online activities.
According to investigators, the suspect advertised her services through Facebook. Her posts allegedly promoted affordable dental procedures that were offered either through home service or at a small makeup clinic located inside her residence.
The operation caught the attention of authorities during cyber patrol operations. Investigators discovered that the woman was publicly offering dental procedures despite allegedly having no formal dental education, professional training, or license to practice dentistry.
Further investigation revealed that she reportedly learned the procedures by watching instructional videos and reading information online. Authorities stressed that dental procedures require proper education, training, and certification because mistakes can lead to serious health problems, infections, and long-term damage to a person’s teeth and gums.
The woman is now facing charges for alleged violation of Republic Act 9484, also known as the Philippine Dental Act, in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Prevention Act. She underwent inquest proceedings and was later able to post bail amounting to P30,000.
The PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group reminded the public to be careful when choosing dental service providers. Authorities advised people to verify the license of a dentist and the legitimacy of a clinic before undergoing any dental procedure.
