A city government’s job post drew criticism online for hiring an e-trike driver and a helper at what is presumed to be below the minimum daily wage.

Caloocan City‘s Public Information Office (PIO) on Tuesday, August 19, announced that the city government is hiring workers under “job order” status.

The positions being offered are for an e-trike driver and a “pahinante,” or helper.

Qualifications for the positions include having a valid driver’s license.

The post stated that the salary for the roles is P10,000, but it did not specify whether this amount is monthly.

Applicants were directed to a link for more information. Upon opening the link, it is revealed that the positions are for “casual appointment.”

A “casual” position in a government means an “appointment issued only for essential and necessary services where there are not enough regular staff to meet the demands of the service and for emergency cases and intermittent period not to exceed one year.”

The post drew angry reactions from some Filipinos online, who said that the salary, if paid monthly, would fall below the minimum daily wage in Metro Manila.

“NCR tapos P10,000 lang? Under ng city hall pa? Ano ba naman ‘yan?” a Facebook user commented.

“Mag-apply sana ako, kaso, dehado, wala pa sa minimum,” another said.

“Lala niyo. Mismong nasa government, ‘di nagpapasahod [nang] maayos,” a different Pinoy commented.

“Mag-driver ka na lang sa warehouse, above minimum pa [kaysa diyan],” another wrote.

If the P10,000 salary in the job post is monthly, the daily wage would be around P460, assuming a five-day workweek.

For comparison, the daily minimum wage for non-agricultural workers in Metro Manila is P695, while workers in agriculture, retail or service, and small manufacturing establishments must earn P658 per day.
