Manila Health Department Warns Public About Bacteria Found in Dirty Street Drinks Being Sold in Tondo
The Manila Health Department has warned the public about possible health risks from contaminated street drinks in Tondo, Manila.
The warning came after a study conducted by the UP Manila College of Public Health-Department of Medical Microbiology. Researchers collected water samples from 12 stalls selling cold street drinks and discovered drug-resistant bacteria in the water being used.
Manila City Health Officer Dr. Grace Padilla announced a multi-point action plan to address the issue and protect the public from possible illness. According to the Manila Health Department, immediate action is necessary since many people regularly buy street drinks, especially during hot weather.

Health officials said they will revisit the 12 stalls included in the study and conduct another round of inspections. Authorities also encouraged residents to report similar cases to the health department to help prevent possible health problems in the community.
The department identified areas in Tondo as among the high-risk locations. Because of this, sanitary inspectors from the six districts of Manila were ordered to conduct stricter inspections on street vendors selling drinks and refreshments.
Based on the study, contaminated water and ice were found to be the main sources of bacteria. Due to this, vendors are now required to use certified potable water and ice only from approved suppliers.
Health officials explained that vendors must present certifications during inspections to prove that their water and ice are safe for public consumption.
Aside from inspections, the Manila Health Department also plans to conduct hygiene training programs for vendors. Those who complete the training will receive certificates as recognition and encouragement to continue practicing proper sanitation and food safety.
Authorities reminded the public to stay careful when buying street drinks and to make sure the products they consume come from clean and safe sources.
