Martin Romualdez Taken to PGH as Sandiganbayan Orders Medical Check
MARTIN ROMUALDEZ – Health concerns surrounding former House Speaker Martin Romualdez have drawn attention after he was moved to PGH following his arrest.
The transfer was carried out in compliance with an order issued by the Sandiganbayan Third Division, according to a report by the Inquirer. Romualdez was brought to PGH while remaining under the custody of authorities as proceedings in his case continue.
Before being transferred, Romualdez had been confined at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City due to health conditions that required medical attention.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla previously said that Romualdez allegedly experienced a “cardiovascular event” and an anxiety attack before his arrest. Earlier reports also indicated that he suffered a stroke and a transient ischemic attack in July.
Romualdez’s legal team had asked the Sandiganbayan to allow him to remain at the hospital while he recovered. His lawyers argued that he needed continuous medical care and should not be transferred until he had been medically cleared.
The Sandiganbayan, however, ordered his transfer to PGH so doctors could examine and monitor his condition. The court remains responsible for his custody while his case is being heard.
Romualdez was arrested on September 7 after the Sandiganbayan issued a warrant of arrest in connection with a non-bailable plunder case.
The charges accuse Romualdez and former Ako Bicol Representative Zaldy Co of allegedly receiving more than P7 billion in kickbacks from government projects carried out between 2022 and 2025.
Romualdez has denied any wrongdoing and maintained that he is prepared to face the allegations through the proper legal process. His case remains pending before the Sandiganbayan, where the accusations will be subject to judicial proceedings.
Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said its personnel and facilities are ready to ensure that Romualdez receives the necessary medical attention while he remains under government custody.
His transfer to PGH is expected to allow authorities and medical professionals to closely monitor his health condition as the legal proceedings surrounding the plunder case move forward.
