2 Siblings Die After Drowning While Gathering Water Spinach for Family Meal
Two young siblings in Bayambang, Pangasinan drowned while gathering water spinach shoots as part of their meal for the day.
On Tuesday (September 15, 2026), the victims, aged 10 and 9, reportedly went to a nearby fishpond together with a younger cousin. The children were looking for water spinach shoots, locally known as kangkong, which they planned to bring home as part of their meal for the day.
According to initial reports, the younger sibling accidentally wandered into a deeper section of the fishpond. Seeing the danger, the older brother immediately tried to help and rescue the child.
However, both of them eventually struggled in the water and were unable to make it back to safety.
Their cousin quickly sought help from nearby residents after witnessing the incident. People rushed to the area as soon as they learned what had happened, but the two children had already drowned before they could be rescued.
The incident left the family devastated. The children’s father, Joenil Vigo, works as a helper in a junk shop to support the household. Their mother, Mary Joy, takes on small jobs whenever opportunities come her way to help provide for the family’s needs.
Many residents expressed sadness over the loss of the two young lives. Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the drowning. They are also looking into whether the owner of the fishpond may have any responsibility in connection with the incident.
As the investigation continues, the residents mourn the loss of two siblings whose simple mission to find something to eat ended in an unimaginable tragedy.
