A Catholic archbishop on Sunday warned the public against individuals or groups who exploit anger over government corruption for personal or political gain.
In a pastoral statement, Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan said growing frustration has created conditions ripe for manipulation by those seeking influence through intrigue and innuendo.
He warned against ‘false prophets and ambitious adventurists’ offering quick fixes, saying such promises often mask self-serving political motives rather than concern for the common good.
“We must be cunning in recognizing those who sow intrigue and innuendo, as well as those false prophets and ambitious adventurists who promise quick freedom or immediate solutions,” Villegas said.
“They often serve their own self-serving political undercurrents rather than the common good. Not everything that glitters is gold,” he said.
The archbishop, a protégé of the late Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, who helped mount the 1986 People Power Revolution, also rejected any form of violence or military adventurism to “short-circuit” the path to justice.
Villegas, who is also a former president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, said peace comes from justice and dialogue, not from ambition or force disguised as heroism.
“The Church teaches that peace is the fruit of justice and dialogue, not the result of unchecked ambition or force. Our Prince of Peace calls us to be peacemakers, even as we struggle against evil,” he said.
Villegas noted that the public’s impatience for swifter justice can make extreme measures or political shortcuts appear tempting.
But he stressed that faith requires upholding truth, due process and respect for the law, even when legal mechanisms seem slow or flawed.
“The pursuit of justice must never compromise the principles of truth and due process that uphold human dignity,” he said.
