Egypt and the Philippines are strengthening interreligious dialogue through exchanges, training and joint initiative aimed at promoting peace and mutual understanding.
Egypt’s Minister of Religious Endowments Dr. Osama Al-Azhari said recent agreements reflect “several points of cooperation” serving “the best interest” of both nations.
Central to the partnership are planned exchanges between Muslim and Christian leaders, including visits of Filipino bishops and priests to Egypt for dialogue and cultural immersion.
Al-Azhari said Egypt will host clergy who will encounter local churches and visit sites linked to the Holy Family, deepening appreciation of shared spiritual heritage.
He made the statement after a meeting with Archbishop Gilbert Garcera of Lipa, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, at the CBCP headquarters in Intramuros, Manila on April 14.
Among those with the CBCP head during the meeting was Archbishop Ricardo Baccay of Tuguegarao, chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Public Affairs.
Garcera said the dialogue revealed “the beauty of culture, the beauty of interfaith relationship,” adding that “we are brothers and sisters.”
He said participants are united spiritually, saying “we are one in achieving with the grace of God the peace that is expected of us in the whole world.”
Beyond church engagement, Egypt and the Philippines are expanding cooperation with Muslim communities through training programs promoting “coexistence, loyalty and patriotism,” Al-Azhari said.
The initiative, developed with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos led by Secretary Sabuddin Abdurahim, focuses on values of stability and peaceful coexistence.
Additional discussions include possible training for Philippine judges and lawyers, with Egypt offering “full support of knowledge” from its religious institutions and legal bodies.
Egypt’s ambassador to Manila, Nader Nabil Zaki, joined the meetings, which officials said aim to build trust and deepen institutional cooperation.
Al-Azhari expressed optimism about future engagement, citing “great horizons ahead” and reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to support efforts fostering stability, prosperity and stronger interfaith relations.
