A Catholic archbishop on Saturday urged Filipinos to be “critical and discerning” in consuming information and to reject narratives that fuel anger and division amid a widening flood-control scandal.
As investigations into alleged corruption continue, Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy said competing claims and accusations have sown confusion and opened the door to falsehoods.
“Do not spread unverified information. Let us reject misleading narratives that cause anger, division, and fear,” Uy said. “I appeal to everyone to remain calm, peaceful, and focused on the truth.”
Uy said citizens should rely on verified facts and allow thorough, impartial investigations to proceed without political interference.
“We call for a thorough, democratic, and impartial investigation—free from political pressure. No whitewashing. No cover-ups. No protection for anyone involved,” Uy said.
“Those found guilty must face the law, and stolen funds must be returned to the people,” he added.
Uy said the government must hold the corrupt accountable and strengthen systems to prevent similar abuses in the future.
He also urged the public to reject unlawful responses, saying violence would only worsen the situation.
“We reject all violent or unlawful means of addressing these issues. Violence will only bring more suffering,” the archbishop said.
“I ask everyone to pray earnestly—for truth to be revealed, for courage to guide our leaders, and for justice and peace to heal our nation,” he also said.
