Fisherman Dies After Being Punched by Son Following Family Dispute
A 57-year-old fisherman lost his life after an argument with his son turned violent in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.
On the evening of September 6, 2026 (Sunday), the victim, identified only as Lando, was a fisherman living in Purok Bagacay, Barangay Cayhagan. The suspect was his 29-year-old son, Azel, who also worked as a fisherman.
According to the police investigation, the incident happened at around 7:00 p.m. when Lando arrived home. Authorities said he was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time.
Reports revealed that the victim set off a firecracker, which caught the attention of his son. Concerned that the noise might cause alarm in the neighborhood, Azel reportedly asked his father to stop.
As tensions rose, investigators said Lando became angry and allegedly picked up a piece of wood, intending to strike his son. In the middle of the confrontation, Azel reportedly retaliated by punching his father in the head twice.
The blows caused the older man to fall to the ground. During the fall, his head reportedly struck a rock, leaving him unconscious.
Emergency responders from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office quickly arrived and brought the victim to the Sipalay Infirmary Care Unit for treatment. Despite efforts to save him, doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The residents who were saddened that a family disagreement ended in the loss of a life. Neighbors described the event as a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly emotions can escalate during conflicts.
Following the incident, police officers from the Sipalay City Police Station launched a hot pursuit operation and successfully arrested the suspect.
Authorities continue to investigate the case to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Meanwhile, the family is left grieving the sudden and tragic death of the fisherman.
