Indigenous Man Seriously Injured After Surviving Crocodile Attack While Looking for Food
An indigenous man searching for food for his family survived a crocodile attack in Barangay Labog, Sofronio Española, Palawan.
On Tuesday evening (September 15, 2026), the victim, identified as 33-year-old Rolando, was looking for small crabs locally known as tapong along a riverbank in Purok Magsasaka when the incident happened.
According to reports, he was gathering the crabs to have something to eat when a crocodile suddenly attacked him.
The animal reportedly grabbed Rolando and attempted to pull him toward the river. Despite the danger, he fought back using the machete he was carrying. His quick response allowed him to break free and escape from the crocodile before the situation became even worse.
A resident who witnessed the incident said the victim immediately defended himself after being bitten. The struggle lasted only a short time, but it was enough to save his life.
Rolando suffered injuries on the right side of his body, including wounds to his thigh and hand. Concerned residents quickly sought help, and he was rushed to the Sofronio Española District Hospital for treatment.
Barangay Captain Isaac Arcona confirmed the incident and said efforts were immediately made to ensure that the victim received medical attention as soon as possible. As of the latest reports, no detailed information has been released regarding the severity of his injuries or his current condition.
The recent crocodile attack raised concerns among residents living near rivers and waterways in Barangay Labog. Local officials noted that this was already the third recorded crocodile attack in the area, prompting renewed warnings for people who regularly fish, gather food, or work near the riverbanks.
Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious, especially during the evening when visibility is limited and crocodiles may be more active. Community leaders also continue to remind the public to avoid high-risk areas whenever possible.
