Inmate Found Dead Inside Jail Cell in Cebu, NBI Finds Signs of Severe Beating
An inmate who was found dead inside his jail cell at the Cebu City Jail may have suffered repeated physical abuse before his death.
The National Bureau of Investigation Region 7 reported that the inmate suffered severe beating resulting in his untimely demise.
The victim was identified as Fernando Prajes, also known as Andot. Based on the autopsy conducted by NBI medico-legal officers, the inmate suffered from blunt traumatic injuries in different parts of his body.
Authorities revealed that the injuries did not appear to happen in just one day. Investigators believe the inmate may have experienced repeated beatings for nearly a month before he eventually died inside his cell.
Dr. Rene Cam, medico-legal officer of NBI 7, explained that the victim had serious bruises behind his legs, similar to injuries commonly seen in hazing victims. Aside from the bruises, the victim also suffered injuries in his private parts, which were believed to have been caused by strong blows.
According to the investigation, the injury in that area appeared fresh and may have caused unbearable pain to the inmate. Doctors also discovered that the victim lost a large amount of blood, which eventually led to his death.
Several netizens expressed concern over the safety and treatment of inmates inside detention facilities. Others also called for a deeper investigation to identify who may have been responsible for the injuries suffered by the inmate.
Authorities have not yet released complete details regarding possible suspects or whether other inmates may have been involved in the incident. Investigations are still ongoing to determine what truly happened inside the jail cell before the inmate’s death.
It was learned that Prajes had been detained after being accused of abusing his 11-year-old neighbor in Cebu City.
