Jeepney Driver Shares Struggles Amid Continuous Fuel Price Hikes
A jeepney driver has shared his struggles as fuel prices continue to increase, making it harder for drivers like him to earn enough for their daily needs.
A public utility driver has expressed his frustration as fuel prices continue to rise. His sentiments touched many online users and brought attention to the challenges faced by transport workers.
Joel Abelinde, a driver, shared how the increasing cost of petroleum products has greatly affected their livelihood. According to him, many of his fellow drivers have already stopped operating their vehicles because they are no longer earning enough.
“Nganga po ako [sa ayuda]. Wala po ako sa masterlist. Wala po akong nakuha. Kahapon, nagbaka-sakali ako at nagpunta sa LTFRB, nag-apply ako para makakuha,” Abelinde said.
With fuel prices going up almost every week, their income continues to shrink while expenses keep rising.
Abelinde explained that on most days, what they earn is barely enough to cover fuel costs, vehicle fees, and basic needs at home. Because of this, some drivers are left with little to nothing to bring back to their families.
“Kailan pa, kung ako ay naghihingalo na? 50-50 na nga kami ngayong araw na ito. Kailan pa nila ibibigay ang para sa aming mga tsuper?” he added.
The situation has forced many to look for other ways to survive or temporarily stop working on the road.
Aside from the struggle with fuel prices, Joel also shared his disappointment after not receiving financial assistance. He said he was not included in the list of beneficiaries for the P5,000 aid from the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Despite trying to apply and seek help, he has not received any support so far. He expressed worry about how long they can keep going under these conditions.
