Jinggoy Estrada Faces Sandiganbayan After ‘Not Guilty’ Plea in Flood Control Case
JINGGOY ESTRADA – Senator Jinggoy Estrada’s legal battle over the alleged flood control kickback scheme officially moved forward after a ‘not guilty’ plea was entered during his arraignment.
Senator Jinggoy Estrada entered a “not guilty” plea in connection with the plunder and graft charges filed against him over an alleged kickback scheme involving flood control projects.
Estrada appeared before the Sandiganbayan Fifth Division on Thursday, September 3, for his arraignment. However, the senator refused to personally enter a plea for the charges filed against him. As a result, a “not guilty” plea was automatically entered on his behalf during the proceedings.
The case stems from allegations of irregularities in the implementation of flood control works, with Estrada accused of being involved in a scheme that allegedly manipulated government processes and diverted public funds.
Authorities accuse the senator of receiving P573.75 million in alleged kickbacks through the manipulation and rigging of procurement and project processes. The allegations also involve the supposed siphoning of funds allocated for flood control projects.
The charges have placed Estrada at the center of a widening investigation into alleged irregularities involving government-funded flood control projects. The case is being closely watched as authorities continue efforts to determine the extent of the alleged scheme and the individuals who may have benefited from it.
Former Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Manuel Bonoan was initially charged alongside Estrada in the case. However, Bonoan’s charges were dropped after the Office of the Ombudsman filed a motion seeking to have him serve as a state witness.
His potential role as a state witness could provide investigators and prosecutors with additional information regarding the alleged irregularities and the people supposedly involved in the scheme.
Estrada is currently detained at the New Quezon City Jail in Payatas while facing the criminal proceedings. He has also been suspended from performing his duties as a senator in connection with the case.
With the entry of the “not guilty” plea, the legal proceedings against Estrada will continue before the Sandiganbayan. The senator will have the opportunity to contest the allegations and present his defense as the court moves forward with the case.
The allegations remain accusations at this stage, and Estrada is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a competent court. The proceedings are expected to shed more light on the alleged flood control fund irregularities and determine whether the charges against the senator can be proven in court.
