Sen. Ping Lacson made a revelation about Sen. Lito Lapid
The name of Senator Lito Lapid has emerged as a potential replacement for Vice President Sara Duterte, should she be removed from office through impeachment.
This revelation was made by Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson. The lawmaker revealed that there is growing talk regarding the possibility of Lapid assuming the vice presidency if Duterte is impeached.
Based on the report from Abante, Lacson made this statement about his fellow senator during a recent interview on Monday, October 26.
“Ang narinig ko medyo paborito si Senator Lito Lapid,” Sen. Ping Lacson said.
A potential conflict of interest among senators has emerged regarding a possible vacancy in the Vice Presidency, as they would also serve as judges in an impeachment trial.
Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano had previously urged his fellow senators to decline any appointment to the position of Vice President should the incumbent be removed from office through an impeachment trial.
However, Lacson contradicted Cayetano. He stated that they should not preempt President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who, under the Constitution, holds the authority to nominate a successor for the Vice Presidency.
Lacson clarified that he is not interested in the vice presidency and would rather remain in the Senate.
As of this writing, Sen. Lito Lapid has not spoken yet about Sen. Ping Lacson’s statement.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, Sen. Lapid’s son, Mark Lapid, defended him against accusations that he is a “non-performing” senator. Mark admitted that this kind of comment saddened him. “Nasasaktan ‘yan (Lito). Syempre tao naman tayong pare-pareho,” he said.
To recall, veteran journalist Korina Sanchez’s statement saying “Nanalo pala siya?” intended to Sen. Lapid went viral. Apparently, this was because Lapid is not creating much buzz in the Senate, unlike other senators.
