PHIVOLCS Says Possible Strong Earthquake May Hit Camarines Norte
PHIVOLCS – The volcanology agency recently issued a study about a possible strong earthquake in Camarines Norte.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released a research emphasizing how serious ground shaking could affect the province if a major earthquake happens.
The study used advanced tools such as the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System and Geographic Information System to better understand how strong the shaking might be. Experts focused on what is called expected ground shaking, which helps identify areas that may suffer the most damage during an earthquake.

Based on the findings, many parts of Camarines Norte could experience Intensity VIII or even higher on the earthquake scale. This level is considered very destructive and may cause heavy damage to buildings, roads, and other structures.
It also increases the risk of injuries and danger to residents if proper safety measures are not followed.
The study also recorded a high level of ground movement, with peak ground acceleration reaching up to 0.66g. It indicates very strong shaking that can seriously affect communities, especially in areas that are not well prepared.

Researchers used data from past earthquakes and nearby active fault lines to create simulations. These were combined with mapping tools to clearly show which areas are most at risk.
The hazard maps revealed that some locations in the province are more likely to experience intense shaking than others.
The experts are encouraging local leaders to take action. Strengthening building structures, improving safety plans, and preparing communities are seen as important steps to reduce damage.
PHIVOLCS continues to remind the public to stay alert and be ready at all times. Simple preparations and awareness can make a big difference in keeping people safe when an earthquake strikes.
