Former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is set to be transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
Currently, former House Speaker Martin Romualdez is facing a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan in connection with the alleged corruption involving government flood control projects.
According to the Office of the Ombudsman, the case involves around ₱7.4 billion in allegedly misappropriated funds, and Romualdez, along with former lawmaker Zaldy Co and two other individuals, was charged with the serious offense.
However, the controversy surrounding Romualdez’s arrest grew even further after photos of him inside a hospital surfaced. The unusual images quickly caught public attention and sparked discussions, with many Filipinos recalling similar instances in the past involving politicians facing arrest.
Reportedly, his health conditions included hypertensive atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, unstable angina, and coronary artery disease.
As per the latest, he will be transferred to the custody of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) following an order from the Sandiganbayan Third Division.
During the September 10 hearing, Dr. Kurt Allen Sibayan of Cardinal Santos Medical Center described Romualdez’s hospital admission as unusual.
The doctor said Romualdez was taken directly to a hospital room instead of going through the emergency room after complaining of chest tightness.
Dr. Sibayan also said that he was not allowed to conduct a medical examination on Romualdez when the former lawmaker arrived. He explained that while Romualdez’s condition was not considered an emergency at that time, he was considered at high risk for a heart attack.
Romualdez’s arraignment and pre-trial proceedings are scheduled for September 14, 2026, at 8:30 AM.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-NCR also confirmed that Romualdez’s custody will be turned over to the BJMP in compliance with the Sandiganbayan order.
