Solar-Powered Home Becomes Lifeline for Flood-Hit Neighbors in Bulacan
A solar-powered home has turned into a charging station for neighbors in Barangay Sta. Lucia, Calumpit, Bulacan.
A house equipped with solar panels became an important source of help for residents in Bulacan after days of widespread power interruption caused by severe flooding.
For four days, from August 31 to September 3, 2026, the house of Bayan Patroller Leny Balingit served as a charging station for many neighbors who needed electricity for their phones and other electronic devices.
hile the entire barangay was without power, the family’s solar energy system allowed them to continue generating electricity during daylight hours.
According to Balingit, installing solar panels turned out to be a timely decision. Their system was set up on July 15, only a few weeks before floodwaters began rising in their area on August 8 due to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon.
The family was able to provide a simple but valuable service to nearby residents who needed to stay connected with their loved ones and receive important updates.
Helping neighbors during power outages was nothing new for the family. Since 2019, they have already been allowing residents to charge their gadgets using their generator whenever floods caused electricity interruptions.
Their solar-powered setup made the process even easier if there was enough sunlight. The power supply in flooded areas was intentionally cut by local authorities on August 31 to protect residents from possible electrical accidents.
The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said the precaution was necessary because of the high floodwaters affecting several communities.
As of September 4, electricity had not yet been restored in several barangays, while some areas continued to experience partial outages. The situation remained concerning as local officials reported three cases of electrocution since August 19.
Two of the victims, both 17 years old, died, while another resident survived with injuries. Out of Calumpit’s 29 barangays, 26 were still affected by flooding, showing the continuing challenges faced by residents as they worked to recover from the disaster.
