This New DepEd Innovation Could Change How Teachers Work Every Day
DEPED – Public school teachers may soon get relief from time-consuming paperwork as the Department of Education (DepEd) prepares to launch a new AI-powered solution.
The Department of Education is set to roll out a new artificial intelligence-assisted tool aimed at easing the administrative burden of teachers in schools across the country.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 22, DepEd announced the launch of SIGLA, or the System for Intelligent Growth and Learner Anthropometry. This AI-powered solution is designed as a mobile phone-assisted tool that will help teachers estimate the height and Body Mass Index (BMI) of their students more efficiently.

SIGLA utilizes advanced AI frameworks such as computer vision to perform nutritional classification based on standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO). Through this technology, teachers will no longer need to manually measure and encode student data—tasks that have long contributed to their heavy administrative workload.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized the benefits of integrating mobile technology into routine school processes. According to him, the use of mobile phones will enable teachers to quickly identify students who may require immediate attention, particularly in terms of their nutritional status.
With faster and more accurate assessments, schools can provide early nutrition support to students in need. This proactive approach is expected to improve student health outcomes while also streamlining school operations.
More importantly, the introduction of SIGLA is seen as a step toward allowing teachers to focus more on their primary role—teaching. By reducing time spent on repetitive administrative tasks, educators can dedicate more attention to classroom instruction and student engagement.

DepEd’s initiative reflects a broader push to modernize the education system through digital innovation. As schools continue to adapt to evolving technologies, tools like SIGLA highlight the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance both efficiency and student welfare.
The rollout of this AI-assisted solution signals a significant shift in how schools manage health monitoring, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting teachers while ensuring the well-being of learners nationwide.
